You should go to the Bronx Zoo in the next two weeks. Check for times and admission fees, one day (Wednesday I think but check) is free admission but you will still have to pay for the Congo section to see the gorillas. The paper should be at least three pages of text one for each species. Feel free to add images of any sort but this is not required. It is due April 20 but you can give it to me any time between now and then, either in printed form or e-mail. If you send an e-mail, the computer system here can only handle .doc & .docx files and jpegs, nothing fancy.
The paper will consist of your observations of at least three primates anything from the prosimians to the great apes. The following information is required; you can find it on the signs in front of the enclosures:
scientific name: ex. Lemur cattus (the ring-tailed lemurs)
what family they are in: prosimians, New World monkeys, Old World monkeys, or apes. This might not be on the sign but you can figure it out by referring to the handout given in class.
natural habitat: forest, savanna, etc.
diet: if not on the signs, ask the zoo keepers
country/area of origin
Watch each group of animals for at least 20 minutes and observe their interactions with each other (or lack of them in some cases):
What kind of locomotion do they use (see the handout, i.e. brachiation, knuckle walking etc.)?
Can you tell which are the dominant and subservient individuals?
Are there friendly or hostile interactions?
Who grooms whom and under what circumstances?
Do the animals take notice of the visitors?
Use your powers of observation and your artists eyes and tell me what you see. If you want, you can include sketches, photos, or anything else that adds your observations and understanding.
