Media Length of paper: 4 pages Due Date: Week of Oct. 5, 2020 Guidelines Find a story that intrigues you about a social problem (global or Canadian). This must include the title, author name, and date the article was published. Although the first part asks for a brief summary of 'the facts' this is the least important part of the assignment. The most important part are the questions that follow! Do not forget to answer all of the questions for full credit and answer them with knowledge gained from this course. Be sure to include the following points in this assignment: Step 1: Identify the following: • Who is involved? • What happened? • Why did it happen? • Where did it occur? • When did it occur? • What social problem is being addressed? This is the most important part! Thoroughly answer the following questions in Steps 2-4: Step 2: Write a reflection on your chosen topic and articles considering the following:  Your own opinions on the issue focused in the news article, and your opinion on the mainstream views on this topic.  Analyze the presentation of the topic in the news article: What was the position taken? The bias?  How did the headline set up your reactions? If photos were used, how did they affect your understanding of the issue?  Was there a difference in how the social problems were presented by the news agent? Step 3: Explain why the articles/readings changed or did not change your original opinion on the topic. Critically analyze the articles using one major theory (and concepts discussed in class and discussed in the reading materials). Be sure to include the following points:  How can the social problem presented in the articles be explained using one of the theories discussed in class and in the readings for this course?  Apply the key ideas relating to the theory and key concepts from the course materials  How could this social problem be resolved in this situation by the theory you have decided to use? If the problem cannot be resolved by this theory, explain why.  Clearly state how the people involved are invested in the problem (either resolving it or perpetuating it).  Is this issue supported by society and our institutions? How is it supported by our society (or not)?  Identify your own bias in relation to this topic and reflect on two strategies you could use to support your own growth. Step 4: Analyze solutions to this social problem and include the following points:  How does this problem affect Canadian and the global society? Why has it become a problem?  Why did you pick this social problem to write about?  How would your solutions to the social problems discussed in this course be better than the ones currently in place, and why?  What steps have the public or government or international groups taken to solve the problem?  Find one social action/advocacy group locally or globally that is working to eradicate this social problem.  Identify the group/organization and how they have been trying to solve, bring attention to, educate, and/or attempt to eradicate this social problem.  Do you agree with their perspective on advocacy? Explain why or why not?
