If our objective is to save documents uploaded by a user securely and allow them access based on predefined rules or we want to develop our own document storage engine. If we want to store client's documents then I would suggest you to use OpenKM as your internal document management system. In openKm, documents are stored on encrypted format with their versions and its a highly secure open source document management system. We can integrate it our application and all documents uploaded by the user from the front end would be saved to openKm in encrypted format.
