They'd have to know what they're doing, and also, finding viruses on a thumb drive is not indicative of said individual's sneaky involvement in "loading spyware onto it", because most people have no clue how viruses are created, and how they behave, for the same reason people act all paranoid when you send them a harmless social network link, and they assume it's a virus, while all it takes is getting over one's 'willful dyslexia', and reading the blue link to realize that it's harmless. Anyway, I've been able to detect, and remove viruses manually since 2008, so I can help put an end to your suspicions once and for all. Let me know if you're interested. Peace out! :)

My suggestion is to load the USB drive on a Linux live environment for closer inspection which would be safe from malware. I can help you with that.
