INTERVENTIONS AUSTRALIA A New Beginning - Respectful Interventions that Work We intervene to provide: EDUCATION, EMPATHY, AWARENESS, SUPPORT and DIRECTION; What is an intervention? When drug and/or alcohol use spirals into dysfunction, families and friends are often the first to experience the confusion, frustration, helplessness and fear that invariably arises if the problem remains untreated. An intervention is often necessary to break the escalating cycle of despair. An intervention is a highly structured 2 day process involving a person in crisis and their families and friends. The goals of an intervention are not merely to convince a person in crisis that they need treatment, but to also provide a systematic solution for all parties concerned. At Interventions Australia, we believe an effective intervention will: o bring together, the intervention ‘target’ and their family/friends expressing concern; o facilitate a solution focused discussion and to educate all parties about the issues at hand; o structure a safe environment so that all parties can face each other honestly and move forward; o interrupt any dysfunctional cycles of communication and enabling behaviours; o provide support for all parties, promote optimism and instill hope for the future; o provide clear, concise and succinct information about treatment options and pathways; o determine and discuss the needs of each party; and o help delineate useful boundaries and limits to behaviour. Transparent, honest communication can be difficult to achieve at the best of times, but in a crisis, heightened emotions can make it harder. Structured interventions help to establish functional pathways to stop an addiction problem from getting worse. Structured interventions also help provide support for loved ones. And most importantly, structured interventions give hope for the future. OUR MODEL • Interventions are conducted by a team of highly experienced professional clinicians with many years of direct experience in counselling, mediation, education and training. • All interventions are transparent – both family and client targeted are aware that an intervention will occur and both will be prepared for a facilitated meeting between each party. We do not support manipulated encounters where a person is ‘forced’ into a hostile meeting with accusers. We aim to preserve the dignity of each party instead; • Our approach is compassionate and supportive, rather than punitive and controlling. Outcomes are generally poor if people feel ‘forced’ into treatment. We believe instead, that voluntary commitment to recovery yields more permanent change. • We are solution and direction focused – facilitating a meeting whereupon options can be explored by all parties involved, and where detailed information on treatment is provided. • We encourage a holistic and systems approach to the problem at hand – encouraging all parties to understand themselves as being parts of a greater whole where each party has a role to play in order that the system can be healed. • Each intervention will be customised according to the needs of each family/friend. There is no magic formula, rather we take the time to establish a relationship from the beginning in order to understand what will be required of our clinicians. We believe each situation is unique and our interventions are flexible and adaptable as required; • We try not to use labels such as ‘co-dependant’, ‘addict’ etc – rather, we focus on behaviours instead, and on the desired outcomes required; • We recognise that families and friends may be traumatised, scared, frustrated or overwhelmed by the time they reach the point of requesting an intervention. Our response in turn will be grounding, calming, nurturing and soothing;
