Hi I am currently working on a project that will allow me to complete tasks on an existing device via wifi. I have an existing microcontroller with a 4x5 membrane keypad and LCD display. I cannot alter the unit other than tie into existing connectors and I need to control the unit via wifi. My Idea is to parallel(emulate) the keypad using a pair of 4051 multiplexers and the existing kepad connector & mount a USB camera above the existing LCD screen to keep it simple. combine it all with a PI and local network and access via web browser or ideally a simple android/ios app. Near to real time video streaming is required as to monitor information on the screen as it is interacted with via the keypad. The Pi is dedicated to this function i.e all pins are free.

I have designed a similar system for a home automation startup. Since you are usifn raspberry pi, it totally makes things simple. To emulate the keypad you can directly use the raspberry pi to simulate the keypad that would help you control your microcontroller. Now the regarding the video streaming, you can connect a usb / pi camera and add ip camera functionality which can help you stream video almost live. I been working on IOT based services and products for quite a while now. Would love to hear back!
