I am an MBA [login to view URL] study is focused on the challenges facing Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa and why they fail. The research will identify the major elements and problems affecting South African SMEs and establish which challenges are perceived to negatively influence South African SMEs This study entitled "The Challenges affecting South African SMEs and why they fail “ is a qualitative research that attempts to accumulate existing information and data regarding the major elements and challenges facing the SME sector. I have interviewed 18 individuals (sample). The sample considered in the study consists of SME owners, Ministry of Small Business Development, The Department of Trade and Industry, and Sectoral Education and Training Authority (SETAs) which is a critical vehicle for SME development (ANNUAL REVIEW OF SMALL BUSINESS IN SOUTH AFRICA 2005-2007) and SEDA. The research also used a combination of both descriptive and exploratory research methods in the conduct of the study. This data needs to be analysed and the findings will be presented in a written report.
