I am a teacher by profession and a writer by avocation. I have been proofreading for 9 years and writing for publication since I was in high school. I started proofreading for my mother, who was a writer, when I was in elementary school. Mary, Mary Quite Contrary By Sharon Heller ACT ONE FADE IN: EXT. THEATRE - EVENING-ENGLAND, 1850 A European grand theatre. PEOPLE walking in, elegantly dressed. Marquee says "Frankenstein. INT. THEATER STAGE - FRANKENSTEIN'S CREATURE lies on a table in a dungeon. A STAGEHAND throws the switches. Storm begins. Table raises up. Lightning strikes it. Hand starts to quiver. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN stands over table. The creature begins to stir. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN (looking aghast) It's alive! He looks at the yellow, watery eyes of the creature and his hideous mummy like appearance. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN Oh what horror have I created! He backs up. The creature reaches his hand out to Victor Frankenstein. Frankenstein runs out the door. The creature gazes at him with sad eyes. PAN ON AUDIENCE, horror struck and screaming. INTERCUT TO BOOTH MARY SHELLEY (serene smile; piercing eyes; pale skin; reddish full hair), in her 40's, watches the stage from a booth in the balcony. She is quiet, reserved, warm but at times volatile. She weighs her words and actions carefully. Next to her sits her son PERCY, around age 20. PERCY SHELLEY The audience is terrified Mama. MARY Yes... as I was the first time the creature burst into my dreams. PERCY SHELLEY How old were you? MARY Nineteen. PERCY SHELLEY Why I'm nineteen, mama. I don't know if I could create such a gruesome story. Such evil. MARY Yes. His acts are evil. But remember he was not born thus. Unjust treatment made him a monster.
