Personal Stories About Depression
I have personally experienced Depression, while I was staying abroad.
I had a close friend who was highly qualified. She was about 32 years of age. Had a loving husband and a son who was very bright academically.
One fine day, she started experiencing acute acidity. She became restless and felt nausea. She went to her neighbor and tried some home remedy.
The situation continued for two more days and she consulted the local physician. The doctor requested some reports. Apparently, everything was normal. But she didn’t feel that way. She started complaining about cramps in legs. As the days passed, it became unbearable to be at home alone after her husband went to office and the child went to school. She would cry continuously for hours together for no obvious reasons. Meanwhile, she visited a psychiatrist who along with the medicines started counseling sessions with her. But, initially she did not respond to the treatment. Her self denial continued. She thought she will not be able to cook, if she went to the market, she might have a fall. After seeing a nice movie, she will complain that she did not enjoy it. She was filled with negative thoughts and thoughts about death. It became unbearable for her to stay in her house alone.
Lucky that she was, she had tremendous support from family and friends. Her in laws came to stay with her and provided much needed emotional support and also helped her with the routine chores. Her friends started visiting her on a regular basis, would persuade her to go for a walk or do dome simple shopping. All this continued along with the medicines and the professional counseling. Her counselor suggested that she write down every thought that crossed her mind and write down the best scenario and the worst scenario for the thoughts that she had.
A few of her friends started to take her to the prayer meetings. It was nearly a year now. Her conditioned improved and the dosage of medicine was reduced. Slowly, the counseling sessions also reduced and after a span of one and a half year. She recovered from depression. The medicines and counseling sessions were stopped and she was regaining normalcy. She started going out alone and became the normal person that she once was.
She even started social work by distributing home made sweets to the local laborers.
She had really come out of the acute depression that she once faced.
One thing that came out loud and clear was the patience, love, care and emotional support from the family and the friends.
Had it not been for the support of her family members , she would have taken much longer to come out of depression. When she kept on asking the same questions again and again, the perseverance shown by friends was worth watching. Friends took care of her as though she was a small child. They provided her with the shoulder to cry on when she was in need.
Today we have got our friend back. She is once again the jovial person that she always was.
