BOOK REVIEW; WHAT GOOGLE WOULD DO; JEFF JARVIS
Introduction
There are great lamentations worldwide that Google has become a monopoly and many institutions and companies have come up with goals that are common relating to the regulation of this giant in internet. To this, Jarvis, an analyst of the media, a blogger and a professor says that it is sheer stupidity claiming that Google does not have much influence in the real world. A week never passes with the lack of a problem with Google. These include newspaper complaints, complaints from book publishers, complaints from public authorities, complaints from competitors and even complaints of the Google conflicts with the state. However, Jarvis holds that companies and institutions would be very successful if they adopted the system of Google of doing things in his book, ‘What Would Google Do? And he goes ahead to explain why this is so as discussed below.
Structure of the Systems of Google
New and creative modes of thinking are outlined by the structure of the systems of the business performed by Google. Google basic product is their engine used for searching and the generation of results that are relevant is of utmost attraction. The most fundamental thing is that Google involves their users in the search lists. Thus, the results are not only the works of Google but also those of their users. Google’s way of organization of data prioritizes the needs of most users and thus, its products are a result of the thoughts of many people. Thus, as users continue to view the Google results, its wisdom is eminent thus attracting more users and developing repeated users. Google’s greatest achievement is the invention of advertising mechanisms that are free.
The acting and thinking system of Google Company provides a lot of distributed materials to the users offering ideas on businesses and even entrepreneurship. Majority of people prefer using Google instead of developing their own search sites. Google offers a range of options from offering maps, videos from you tube, and even ways of increasing budgets all offered freely. This way, Google is able to help much business whether small or big.
Proof of Jarvis Opinion about Google
Jarvis proves his theories at the second part of the book. The chapters are put into divisions covering particular institutions or sectors indicating things that Google would do when placed in those areas. For example, he on the way Google would handle a restaurant, Jarvis says that it would make good use of data so that customers can learn through the menu the satisfaction of other customers. Jarvis continues to say that the kitchen would be open for advice from the audience on things to be cooked. Restaurants by Google would also be turned to not only eating places but discussion places or they could let the customers do their cooking and share the profits.
Google in car manufacturing business would build cars on designs from open sources. Cars would be created according to the customers wishes and would draw motivation from the sale of models specified by the customers. On air companies, passengers would be given opportunities of narrating their flying experiences after and before the flight talking about where they are coming from and their destination. The passengers would become a community sharing experiences and interests thus attracting more customers. In estates, Google would reduce on the responsibilities of agents and come up with quotes containing the prices, and type of property and information regarding the times for inspection. Assistance by agents would be left to the choice of the buyer. These examples are used by Jarvis for insurance companies, telecoms operations, energy firms, medical equipments, banks, schools, the media and even advertising agencies. Ina these scenarios, the companies must have a goal relating to what they want.
Over Optimistic
Jarvis ideas are attractive and his beliefs that target consumer awareness are good. However, many consumers do not have enough time to concentrate on improving business products. Majority of people only want to purchase and consume without wasting their time on. Many users of Google contribute to the quality of their search lists without even being aware of it whereas Jarvis propositions require customer involvements and this is hard to establish. Though Googles system is full of wisdom, Jarvis did not put into consideration that not many consumers would be ready to be involved in the production processes thus; his book is still under open questioning in relation to imitating the Google system.
