A registered nurse generally specializes in assisting medical doctors in the treatment and care of patients. An RN’s duties include assessing a patient’s needs, providing case management, and advising patients of follow-up care. The education level of a registered nurse may be one of two degrees. They may earn either a bachelor of science or an associate degree in nursing. A nurse practitioner is qualified to not only give patient care similar to that of a registered nurse, but to also prescribe medications. A NP may diagnose as well as treat illnesses.
