1. Please discuss the film “Straightlaced”. In your discussion please include: the film’s premise, what types of ways gender is so central in our culture and how that has affected interactions. Provide examples from the film and also feel free to share personal stories. 2. In reading your posts, it sounds like the sex and gender chapter resonated with many of you for multiple reasons. As a person who identifies as male, many of you did not really get some of the ways in which women experience discrimination, unrealistic expectations and inequity before reading the chapter (read male privilege here). Better late than never! Those of you who identify female discussed pay inequity and pressure to look thin, attractive and young to a larger degree than men. Please sound off on the following topics but be aware that these questions are in no way meant to suggest that men are bad for not knowing these things, in many ways we are all unaware of social pressures if they do not directly relate to us. A. Why don’t men get it at first? B. How do social pressures to appear a certain way harm women and girls-provide examples? C. Discuss inequity in women’s pay and work. 3. This question has multiple parts. What is white privilege? Discuss this concept and how it relates to discrimination. Your text discusses race and ethnicity through multiple lenses. Choosing the sociological theory you prefer, discuss the concept prejudice and discrimination. 4. Discuss the family through each of the three sociological theories. What are your thoughts on marriage for yourself personally and as a social institution?
