Our site will allow users to download digital images. You can buy single images, or as a monthly member, you will be allowed multiple downloads per month. We are using the SendOwl app to authenticate users and deliver our digital images, and Recurring Memberships app to create memberships.
The basic feature we need to create is the ability to track and limit the number of downloads per month per member. SendOwl cannot do this, unfortunately.
Here the requirements for this feature to work. Be able to:
- Track number of image downloads per member per month
- Prevent downloads that exceed monthly limit
- Allow upgrades to the next level of membership once users hit their monthly limit
- Roll over any unused downloads over to the next month

Here are a few options that have been suggested (your team might have better ideas, though):
1. Modify the links to hit a script on our server. The link would have some type of token attached to identify the user. We'd then redirect to the file and also store a count in a user metafield. We can use that count to restrict additional downloads.
2. Host the downloads on Amazon S3 and use the technique from this article.
This is the best because it tracks actual bytes sent.. whereas the other option doesn't really know if the file was downloaded successfully or stopped. We might need to host the download files on Amazon S3 and that way we can control the access through their API.
Let me know if this is something you can do, and what is your estimate for developing it.
The Shopify programming environment is not as flexible as WordPress so this might be a challenge.
