Improve the quality pictures uploaded in Magento ver. 1.7.0.2

Hi,
We have a website in Magento ver. 1.7.0.2, and we want to image quality fixed. The photos we upload should stay 100% quality as we upload this.
Right now the photo quality seems downgraded to 80-90%. When you can fix this, please let me know.
Also we need to have the max upload filesize changed. We changed this already in [url removed, login to view] , but this did not change the issue in magento. There it still seems 125Kb.
Hope you can help us with solving the issue's.
