A small nonprofit organization has been using simple data validation in MS Excel spreadsheets for years on behalf of the organization's accounting and case management activities, but some pick lists are growing long enough (now over 200 and soon to grow to perhaps 1000) to be difficult to scroll and select. Additionally, as with most rapidly growing organizations, drop down data validation lists need to be updated frequently, but the authority to update needs to be restricted to certain individual users. Finally, it would be most efficient if data validation lists could be maintained in either the same Excel file but on one or more separate sheets, OR in totally separate files so multiple files could draw their data validation information from a single source, making list maintenance, editing and updates more easily manageable among various users.
Currently, Excel files (from MS Excel version 2010 and 2013) are often uploaded and converting to Google Sheets to take advantage of Google's handy dynamic filtering of named range data validation lists as as user begins typing in a data validated cell. However, transitioning to and from Google sheets brings additional problems of its own. Hence, this project to develop and document one or more Excel macros that would offer the following minimum functionality:
* based upon data validated cell input typed by a user, dynamically filter and present entries for selection from a name range used for data validation to only those items which contain the typed alphanumerics (including blank spaces), in any position within each entry in a data validation named range.
Additionally, it would be helpful if the macro(s) could also accomplish the following:
1. provide auto-complete for a cell's entry once from the filtered data validation list when the matching selections have been narrowed to a single possibility, by pressing either the Entry or Tab key;
2. provide an option to dynamically update and resort a named range used for data validation, with customizable password protection; (For example, we would like certain lists not to be editable "on the fly", such as our chart of accounts; however, we are adding new participant names weekly and do want that list to be dynamically updatable.)
3. allow for maintenance of data validation lists on either a separate sheet within a worksheet OR in a separate file; and/or
4. dynamically adjust the "window" presenting the unfiltered or filtered data validation selections, definable in both length and width, to accommodate the displayed entries, within programmable definable limits
Please provide your separate quotations for creating each such functionality, complete with clear instructions for deployment and usage for each function.
