FREELANCER PROJECT

I want a collage of photos with text on poster board. Size is 12x18 inches. I will need a PDF for the printer. (I will want to be able to edit this before I finalize it with you.

The poster is to convey a story about fossil collecting at the St Paul Stone Quarry in Indiana and a rare fossil that my husband (Craig) found while collecting at the quarry. I asked him to tell me the story and he wrote;

“ I remember the day I found this double trilobite like it was yesterday! When I collect at the St Paul quarry I look for a large flat slab of shale. On this particular hunt I found one measuring about four feet square. With chisel in hand, patience, and high hopes I began splitting ¾ inch thick layers off the slab. I went down several layers not finding much and then found a Calymene trilobite. I decided to continue in the same spot even though it was hot and I was tired and sweaty. I continued patiently splitting off more slabs one by one and when I was almost to the bottom, I found a slab with two Calymene celebra trilobites on it! Oh boy I said to myself. What a great find and good feeling and that's the reason I go back again and again. I always enjoy hunting in this quarry and all of the opportunities to go on fossil digs with NCFC members.”

Insert somewhere: “I’ve collected there during spring, summer and fall months. Early spring is my favorite time to collect because the shale in the piles has had a chance to weather during the winter and clubs and collectors haven’t been there yet.”

#10 In addition to trilobites, you can find crinoids, brachiopods, bryozoans, cephalopods and gastropods like this one! One does have to search a bit of course, as all the layers get mixed together on the piles.

Body text: The quarry exposes Silurian age Waldron Shale in the overburden of the rock quarried for crushed stone. This gray shale separates into easily split bedding planes when it has weathered a bit. Some quarry layers contain only a few fossils but in other layers fossils are abundant.
