"This is a series of episodes titled "All Models are Wrong, Some are Useful," a quote attributed to British statistician named George Box who gifted us this quote in 1976. His point was that we should focus more on whether something can be applied to everyday life in a useful manner rather than debating endlessly if an answer is correct in all cases. As historian Yuval Noah Harari puts it, “Scientists generally agree that no theory is 100 percent correct. Thus, the real test of knowledge is not truth but utility. Science gives us power. The more useful that power, the better the science.” Even Einstein’s work was not perfect in all cases, but it has been incredibly useful—not just for increasing our understanding of the world but also for practical purposes. For example, the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) used in your phone and in your car must take the effects of relativity into account to deliver accurate directions. This series is about how to make decisions in an imperfect world using systems thinking. In this series that we have named "All Models are Wrong," we approach systems thinking using the learning tool of "Business Games," in which we will be modeling social dilemmas using systems thinking tools. In the first series, we will create a “Business Game” based on the United Nations Global Digital Compact. The “Business Game” assumes that the UN Global Digital Compact is the future governance mechanism for global digital trade. These digital governance decisions will affect every individual, every organization, every community, every country, every society, and the entire world. Using systems thinking tools, we will explore the Global Digital Governance dilemma, and how to develop solutions using the same tools. Welcome.

Given the focus on governance, the worldview adopted is fundamentally informed by cybernetics as the science of governing or managing information, with the goal of driving systems. Our intent in undertaking the synthesis below is to understand how various regulatory actions may impact specific outcomes. In the synthesis, we will seek explanations as to what the key decision variables of the digital society are, thus providing pointers as to what the pivots of Society 5.0 are. As the global economy also transitions to the digital economy, we will emphasize a synthesis that gives primacy to the emerging digital economy. In the digital society or Society 5.0, it is the primacy of ideas and knowledge that take precedence. Infrastructure, or connectivity, knowledge, or content, and skills, or capacity, are key resources for realizing the benefits of Digital Transformation. Consequently, some of the regulatory questions that arise are as follows:
• What are the current regulatory issues of Global Digital Governance?
• How do we address connectivity, content and capacity issues in the Digital Society?
• Which systems should be implemented to manage it?
• Which systems are needed and useful the Digital Society?
We seek to find answers through the synthesis in this series titled “All Models are Wrong, Some Useful”.
