Civil engineering Post Doc - with extreme ambition

My day job is "egineer for unique structures". A consultant. I work on a large variety of structures and components. From various materials. Wrestling with various standards - Eurocodes, DNV, ASTM. Applying them for unique problems. Doing a Ph.D. (and a Post Doc) I built an industrial laboratory. With massive hydralic pistons (PID controlled), emectric motors. Designed robot frames. Ran the lab between teaching and passing exams. In the process I've ended up picking my favorite software. Inventor NASTRAN. It seems to be priced fairly. And works pretty well. So, on my spare time I keep expanding my skill set - by doing private orders. I do hope to some day open my own design office. And to do so, I will need to be able to recognize the best talent. Which means I have to know how things work and how to do things correctly - before I ask anyone else for assistance. And as it is, at this day, I'm quite independent already :)

ASTM allows to certify them with nothing more than pressure testing. Which is great, because using numerical simulations I can make them extremely reliable. Within all the safety factors ASTM and Eurocodes ask for.
High pressure barrel
Always wanted to test a jet engine / turbine propeller. Was expecting it to hold near 12k rpm... It seems, if made from titanium alloy, it could hold up to 120000 rpm.
Still need to add pressure, maybe temperature, but... looks pretty cool already. Just the centripetal force in this one, but still interesting
Jet engine components
Wood is a crazy material. It's a polimer. It behaves differently depending on which direction it's loaded. It acts like a sandwich of thin alluminum plates glued with soft ruppber. Very strong when pulled and compressed along the grain. Very soft when the grain is squeezed together.

It's not too hard to model, though ir requires advanced simulation tools. Here's an example :)
Wood simulations. Advanced Orthotropic 3D

An example of overloaded locking mechanism, that holds a linear guide rod in place.
The plate is held by two bolts, pre-tensioned to 30kN force. And the plate is loaded in two direction. During loading it gets permanently deformed slightly. But the deformation is safe. The joint doesn't fall apart. The joint is failsafe.

Also, fatigue tests were done on the part. And it shows only surface damage. There is enough metal working within the endurance limits to survive near infinite loading cycles :)
Sliding rod locking plate - plastic simulation
A fun example of components interacting. LEGO components, test of the strength of ABS plastic.

There is no limit how many components can be simulated at once, as they interact with each other. And no limits on complexity of the geometry.

Often times simple simulations are enough. But if you wish to know how the part will "fail" in detail - then the failure will require advanced simulations.

So, that's a simple explanation. Most things are designed to never cross "maximum strength". That is achieved using simple FEM (linear elastic).

If you wish to design something that will fail safely (like a roll cage, or some sacrificial piece, safety feature), then you will need more advanced FEM, with plasticity, thermal gradients, fatigue, etc... all available :)

It can be quite a challange to model heat distribution.

Only "steady state" - is fast and easy. If you have a constant temperature on input and output, it is plausible to quickly estimate how the temperature will move...

But as soon as your input is fluctuating - you enter a temporal domain. Suddenly, heat storage and heat distribution kicks into action. And the simulation becomes long and relatively complicated.

I can take it to the next level for you if you'd like to. I can apply fluctuating temperatures on your components - multiple components interacting with each other. Then look at how the components expand / contract. And how that can change their dimensions, loads. Fatigue... permanent deformations due to temperature, etc...

Anything from heat distribution within molds for plastic injection - to heat storage in geothermal setups. Cooling of microchips... etc... etc... etc...

Kokemus

Engineer for unique structures

TopTeam A/S
lokak. 2022 - Voimassa
A consultant, for unique structures. I have a Post Doc in engineering. Meaning - a deep understanding of simulations, modelling of physical material properties. Which empowers to find unique solutions for a wide range of problems. Doing 3D drawings and technical sketches. Designing things according to standards. Etc.

Post Doc

Aalborg University
tammik. 2018 - lokak. 2022 (4 vuotta, 9 kuukautta)
While "studying" I was working. They hired me in the lab. Designed and built heavy equipment. Did maintanance and operated of hydraulics. Built, designed and coded 3t tobots, that push with 20t force... The diploma says "geotechnician", ignoring I built the very equipment used for testing foundation strength... I threw my thesis into the trashcan on my way out. And baught 3D CAD software. For that's what I "really did", "truly learned".
