I am an English sub-editor and multimedia production journalist with years of experience editing copy on different subjects with varying levels of complexity. My qualifications include a first-class degree in journalism from the University of Lincoln and a post-graduate diploma in sub-editing from The Editorial Centre and Press Association. I offer the following services: Proofreading and editing During my career I have edited copy for a variety of print and online publications, including leading national and international news organizations. Proofreading – checking for spelling, grammar, punctuation, typos, capitalizations, paragraphs, spaces, headings and page numbers. Full edit – proofread plus URL checking, fact checking, querying possible libelous material, checking for clarity and rewriting material where required, including heavy rewrites. For smaller documents, I can usually return your work to you the same or following day (depending on the amount of words and my workload). Let me know in advance if you’d like me to make the changes as I go, or return your original document with annotations, so you can choose whether you want to make changes yourself. Press releases Press release writing As a former press officer and newspaper copyeditor, I have experience in both writing and receiving press releases. As someone who used to read and reject many press releases on a daily basis, I know what makes successful copy avoid joining the majority in the recycle bin. I’ll correspond with you to be certain of the exact point you want to get across, stay in touch via a series of e-mails or the instant messaging service of your choice (if required), conduct research from your website or documents you provide and write the press release. Let me know if you require a targeted press release for a particular publication or a general press release you can distribute to multiple media outlets. Press release editing If you have already written your press release, I’ll polish it by proofreading it, flagging up possible libelous material, checking for clarity and a small amount of rewriting where required. I can usually write a press release fairly quickly. Let me know your deadline and I’ll tell you whether my workload will allow me to meet it. Resumes (or English CVs) Have the skills for the job but can’t quite conjure the right words to dazzle potential employers? In today’s economic climate employers can literally receive hundreds of applications for a single post and you have the daunting task of summarizing your academic achievements and career on two pieces of paper and trying to make it stand out from the rest. That’s why so many people these days are hiring a professional. I understand that your resume is one of the most important documents of your life and I’ll strive to give you the best chance of being granted an interview. I don’t use templates; all the resumes I write are created from scratch. I’ll correspond with you via e-mails or messenger to make sure I have all the information you need and ask questions intended to uncover skills and qualities that employers look for that you may not even be aware you possess. If you are applying for a specific job and need a more targeted resume, I’ll spend time looking at that company’s website to get a feel of the language they use and the kind of person who would make an ideal candidate. Then I’ll write your resume with that company in mind. If you need an accompanying covering letter, either general or targeted to a specific job, I can provide these at an additional cost. I don’t rush resumes or covering letters because I know how important they are. Let me know when you need them by and I’ll tell you whether I can comply. If you are applying for a specific vacancy, don’t forget to leave time for mailing it in before the closing date. Writing I can also write on a variety of subjects in the style of your choice at an hourly rate. I can write or edit in either US or UK English, depending on your requirements.
