I am Alex Barrett and Ranger's Moon is my new business. My experience in information technology dates all the way back to 1979 when I started work as a computer operator. From there I have been involved in a variety of industries including finance, telecommunications, outdoor pursuits, advertising and wildlife conservation. Throughout it all there has been a thread of involvement with IT as the industry has grown and developed into the sophisticated world we live in today. After a decade based in Africa, the latter half of which I spent in Zambia, I returned to the United Kingdom in April 2009 and found myself a new home in the far north of Scotland. Thurso is as far away as you can go on the British mainland without falling off and this may make it seem an odd place to locate a business that aims to trade across the world. I anticipate that some of Ranger's Moon clients will be as far from the hustle and bustle of the crowds as I am. Here in the windswept north there is time to think through the problems and come up with solutions in an original and effective way. With today's broadband technology, VOIP and so forth Ranger's Moon is no more remote than the suburbs of London and far more condusive to a productive and creative environment, in my opinion. Operating costs generally are reduced and when the need arises there is a ready pool of very able people who can supplement my skills and fill in my weak spots. I hope to build a thriving and successful business up here that can take advantage of the Highlands and Islands recognition of the need for new technology and the Internet to provide local prosperity in the twenty-first century.
