Free WordPress theme fanatics may initially think the portfolio of site of my wife is based on Pure, however, that is not the case. When Kate asked for a site to be put online quickly (later that day), using an off the shelf theme seemed the sensible choice. Initially the Pure theme seemed a great choice until we discovered that it displays a blank page with simple loading graphic until the full page is loaded. In the case of this site with 28 images, even after quite strong compression, that meant a wait of ten seconds. Obviously, it would be crazy to expect viewers to wait that long, so the graphic style was merged with another free theme called PinBin that loads in a progressive manner. This was an interesting exercise in terms of seeing how using an off the shelf theme can dramatically cut time and costs. It also makes it clear that you need to be careful that your website offers acceptable performance.
