Technical Illustrator & CAD Designer

My name is Laura Shank and I am a Technical Illustrator and CAD Designer, with 15 years experience. I can take your product illustration/design needs from concept to completion, working from photos and sketches (or physical parts) all the way to an owner's manual or a set of assembly instructions, laid out in InDesign and ready to print. I can provide any style of illustration you prefer: from clean black & white line drawings to photo-realistically rendered 3d models, using a multitude of techniques (tracing existing images/drawings, recreating existing drawings, reverse engineering physical parts, working from client sketches and images to create brand new drawings, working from client's written direction only). I have a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Technology and a background in Graphic Design. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Autodesk Inventor, InDesign and Wordpress extensively. I also have experience working with a translator to create materials for distribution outside the USA. You might call me a "ONE STOP SHOP" for all your technical illustration and design needs.

These are examples of a project I did for Big Dog Motorcycles. First I removed the backgrounds around the bikes, which were actually shot in a parking lot, using Adobe Photoshop, adding the fun "town & country" backgrounds, . Then I created the specification layout sheets in Adobe InDesign.

This is a 4 page excerpt of a Big Dog Motorcycles Owner's Manual which I wrote (with information provided by SMEs and the stereo manufacturers literature), illustrated (using cad models and Adobe Illustrator) and then laid out in Adobe InDesign.

This is a 2 page excerpt of a French version of a Big Dog Motorcycles Owner's Manual, on which I worked with a french translator to translate existing copy, making edits along the way. I also created all of the illustrations (using cad models and Adobe Illustrator) and then laid out in Adobe InDesign.

I created this illustration using a 3d cad model that I received from the part vendor. The model came to me as a STEP file. i was able to separate the individual components and give them their own material and color assignments. I then exported multiple views of the entire assembly and individual parts into Photoshop. I used Photoshop to adjust the lighting, make part callouts, and create the "ghosted" overlays that reveal inner portions of the part. This illustration was used both as an installation guide for a published service manual, and as a web graphic for ordering spare parts.

These exploded views of a motorcycle front fork assembly were created for use as a web graphic for selling OEM parts and part assemblies. The 3d models are a combination of existing models and companion parts I created to round out the assemblies. After putting all the parts together, I imported these views into Adobe Photoshop and created the "ghosted" views of the internal parts, as well as the part number balloons and arrows.

This is a collection of illustrations I've done using Autodesk Inventor to create the 3d models and Adobe Photoshop to illustrate the wiring. All of these illustrations have been used both in published instruction materials, and as web graphics for an OEM parts website.

Currently Designing and Administrating a brand new retail website for BDM Performance Products, as well as designing HTML email and social media marketing pieces. I also continuing to create technical illustrations and documentation (product manuals, installation instructions), employing both CAD and graphics software such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Created technical illustrations for dealer aftermarket website, service manuals, ownerâ€™s manuals, installation and assembly instructions. Assisted engineers in document clean up and completion. Reverse engineered a large quantity of parts for documentation purposes. Also created graphics for company website (www.bigdogmotorcycles.com). Software used: Autodesk Inventor, Autocad, Photoshop, SolidWorks, Pro E, Macromedia Freehand, Illustrator, InDesign, as well as MS Office applications.
