Throughout my 25 year engineering history, I have worked primarily at small engineering services companies. I preferred these because it is expected there that the designers take charge of their own projects and have the abilities and flexibility to perform all the tasks from product specification to final design packages. The other attractive aspect of working for a small company is that you never knew what would walk through the door. This meant you had to learn and adapt quickly, something I rater enjoyed. Even though the companies were small, it did not mean the projects were small. Some were, but others are well known major products in the U.S., some being 100K+/ yr productions. For the most part, the customers I dealt with were not in the geographical location as the companies we contracted with. Email, telephone, and Skype meetings were more than sufficient to maintain close enough contact between entities to make for successful project outcomes. So it is I have decided to work independently.
