The most common design related question that I'm asked is; "what goes into making a great logo". The answer can be broken down into these three factors 1. A pencil 2. Coffee 3. Cake. Well, the Blackwing 602 takes care of my pencil needs. Fresh ground coffee fulfils number two on the list and as for the cake there is only one solution - Mummy Made It. A small Sheffield based business, Mummy Made It asked for a logo that was clean, simple and walked a fine balance between being professional and homely. The logo is extremely versatile and looks great on flyers, stationary and packaging. It's pretty much always great fun to design a logo, but it's even better when the products taste this good!

Sheffield Sports Chaplaincy required a logo that would enable them to stand out in a city with a rich sporting culture. With the city of Sheffield divided into the Red of United and the Blue of Wednesday, the SSC branding needed to be distinct but also neutral to these two camps. Using a soft green palette I've used the cross (which as a symbol is central to the Christian faith) and gently applied it the shape of a ball. Sheffield Sports Chaplaincy work within a multitude of sporting fields and therefore I was keen to ensure that the logo was not representing any particular sporting event. SSC are keen to raise awareness of their services around the Sheffield area so our goal was to design a logo that was immediately recognisable. Along with the business cards that we designed, we also had to ensure that the logo was adaptable for a variety of printing needs including stationary, clothing and advertisements.

Work Ltd is a charity that provides people with learning difficulties the opportunity to develop life skills in a friendly and rewarding environment. They provide hands on work and life skills experience to people with learning difficulties. The project is comprised of a large workshop, small greenhouse, craft workshop, concrete casting room, educational resource room, a café and a gift shop. They required a bright and colourful logo that could be applied to stationary, signage, clothing and a wide variety of other uses.

Balderstone Free School is scheduled to open in September 2013. This was a particularly fun design project because it isn't everyday that you get the opportunity to create a logo for a School. I clearly remember my high school crest and if I'm not mistaken it had been around (and mostly unchanged) for close to a hundred years. Sadly, schools seem to open and close with an alarming degree of regularlity these days, but it's exciting to think that Balderstone may be around for decades, if not longer, with students wearing the logo that I've designed. The client had stated that the logo needed to contain grapes, which in itself provided quite a challenge. My preliminary sketches featured quite intricate grapes with a lot of detail and shading. However, a school logo needs to be able to up and downscale quite dramatically for the smaller stationary items up to the large signs scattered around the school. DATUS (or The Drug and Treatment User Service) has been providing a magnificent service for a number of years now. Having previously worked on the DATUS website with Hoyland Web Design a couple of years ago, they approached us to redesign their logo. The brief required that the new logo feature a signpost that would represent how DATUS has been helping individuals suffering from substance abuse to turn their lives around. I was particularly keen that the logo be as simple as possible so that even at the slightest of glances users would immediately recognise the DATUS brand. My primary goal was that it be clear and memorable. The logo is a combination mark that enables the logo or icon to even stand independently from each other yet still remaining clearly part of the DATUS brand.
