When people ask how I became a voracious reader, I tell them how my family regularly visited the public library because we did not own a television when we lived in Germany for two years. I tell them about a seven-year-old who carted home as many books as allowed, devouring the words, worlds, and characters. When I realized my calling involved the written word, I set out to learn the industry and craft of copyediting. On my own, I researched publishing and style, refreshed my skills in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and inquired about other copy editors' experiences. As your freelance copy editor, I will zero in on the intricacies, ensuring consistency in style, story, and organization. I meticulously check for faulty grammar, correct erroneous spelling, track down stray punctuation, review capitalization, punctuation, and grammar, and adhere to the house style guide. I have worked in various editorial/production positions since 1994, gaining valuable experience in the process of publishing a variety of materials, from the initial preparation and copyediting of a manuscript to the proofreading of proofs and blues. Depending on the client's preferences, I have copyedited on hard copy, using Microsoft Word's "track changes" function, and using notes/comments in Word, WordPerfect, and Adobe Reader.
