The Bidding Arena
A short story satirising the bidding process for work here at Freelancer.\\nThe Bidding Arena. \\nMy breathing and heart-rate pick up a little as I take the first worn, stone step upwards. The arched stone passageway is gloomy and dark but at the top of the stairway, there seems more light, however feint. I can hear men shuffling in line behind me and the all-too familiar chink and knock of weapons on armour give physical credence to my knowledge of impending combat. A deep rumbling sound flows down those stone steps toward us and the uninitiated would struggle to place it - but I know it. I know it well and it is the baying lunatic sound of the massed mob of spectators and it stirs my juices. I revel in the rush of adrenaline it gives me and the tension that flourishes now in my body. No longer do I fear this deadly procession, no I have come to love it – to need it even. A muted note from a distant horn sounds, which stirs our guard up front and again we move forwards.
