The Effects of Witnessing Domestic Violence
Abstract This study explored the effects of exposure to domestic violence in psychological functioning. Subjects comprised 37 18-year-old incarcerated offenders, of whom 20 reported they had been exposed to domestic violence, and 17 had not. All participants completed the EQ-i:YVTM, the GHQ-28, and were assessed for substance misuse needs, in line with UK national policy. The offender sample was compared to the general population to establish whether a difference existed in emotional intelligence. Additionally, witnesses were compared to non-witnesses in terms of emotional intelligence, psychiatric symptomatology, and levels of substance misuse.
