Thus, these myths were eliminated in human medicine long ago. But this is not the case in translation, as we translators can spend decades of unremitting efforts to advance the translation profession - and certainly some other profession - and develop the substantive expertise necessary for the translation institution. This process involves learning very complex concepts in science and technology, philosophy, law, finance, business, music, and dozens of other fields through immersion in the laboratory, lecture hall, classroom, production line, manufacturing plant, trading floor, or meeting room. This prolonged effort is crucial to our ability to accurately convey all these concepts through language barriers. But regardless of the number of domains that we master as translators, during our presence at the cocktail party itself you will find someone asking you the same question that was asked to translators since the era of the Tower of Babel: "how many language do you talk?" It is a question that points to the naive idea that people think of translation as a profession that does not require a high level of thinking as it can be done by turning the pages of a ferry book while sipping a cup of local tea in the afternoon. But the reality is the opposite.
