Our Zen Cart 1.5.7c e-commerce site (PHP 8.2, Apache/Plesk, MariaDB) is returning an HTTP 500 error on the home page and category pages. We need an experienced Linux/Apache/PHP-FPM engineer to find and fix the root cause. This is a server infrastructure diagnosis job, not a typical "fix my Zen Cart" job. We've already done extensive testing and ruled out the application code as the cause. We need someone comfortable tracing requests at the web-server/PHP-FPM layer, not someone who will start by reinstalling Zen Cart or clearing caches. WHAT WE'VE ALREADY DONE (please read before bidding): Fixed a MySQL connection-limit issue that was causing a separate, unrelated batch of errors (confirmed resolved). Enabled Zen Cart's file-based error logging, which was previously silently disabled, and confirmed it is now capturing real warnings in real time. Confirmed, via four separate command-line reproductions of the exact failing page, that the Zen Cart PHP code itself runs successfully every time. No PHP fatal error or exception has ever been logged for the failing request, despite the failure being currently 100% reproducible in the browser. Confirmed via a live strace that the PHP-FPM worker process exits cleanly during a failure, with no crash signal. Ruled out: memory limits, opcache, database corruption, open_basedir restrictions, ModSecurity, nginx (not running on this server), and Apache module conflicts. Confirmed the Unix socket between Apache and PHP-FPM is stable and present throughout a failing request. Our working conclusion is that the fault is happening in the Apache-to-PHP-FPM request handoff itself, not inside the application. This has not been directly confirmed yet and is the specific gap we need a specialist to close. A full written incident report with all test results, findings, and things already ruled out will be provided to the freelancer we hire, so you can go straight to the unsolved part instead of repeating work we've done. WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO DO: Review our incident report and existing findings. Use root/SSH access (which we'll provide) to directly trace a live failing request at the Apache/proxy_fcgi/PHP-FPM boundary — for example using strace on the Apache worker process itself, Apache's trace-level logging for mod_proxy_fcgi, or similar tools. Identify the specific point and cause of failure. Implement and verify a fix. Write up what was found and fixed in plain language for a non-technical business owner. DELIVERABLES: Root cause of the 500 error identified and documented Fix implemented and confirmed (home page and category pages load correctly and consistently, tested under real traffic, not just a single reload) Payment Modules "edit" link restored to working order (secondary task) Short plain-language write-up of what was wrong and what was changed

STOP scrolling. I won't waste your time repeating tests you've done. Your evidence points to the Apache/PHP-FPM handoff, not Zen Cart. I’ll start with your incident report and reproduce a failing request. HERE IS HOW I WILL TRACE IT: • APACHE WORKER: Trace the request through Apache and proxy_fcgi. • PHP-FPM: Correlate worker activity with Apache logs and responses. • ROOT CAUSE: Pinpoint where the request fails and why. • VERIFIED FIX: Apply the fix and repeatedly test both page types. • SECONDARY FIX: Restore the Payment Modules “edit” link. I’ll focus on the exact diagnostic gap you’ve identified. No reinstalling Zen Cart or repeating checks you’ve already completed. PROOF OVER PROMISES: My background includes PHP, Linux server troubleshooting and debugging. Profile: [https://www.freelancer.com/u/ambar](https://www.freelancer.com/u/ambar) THE EASY NEXT STEP: Share the incident report and I’ll trace the unresolved handoff. You’ll get the verified fix and a plain-language incident summary.

Hi, I will start by reviewing your incident report and existing findings to understand the context and previous work done. Using the root/SSH access you provide, I will trace a live failing request at the Apache/PHP-FPM boundary. This will involve using strace on the Apache worker process and enabling trace-level logging for mod_proxy_fcgi to pinpoint the exact failure. Once I identify the specific point of failure, I will implement a fix and verify that both the home page and category pages load correctly under real traffic conditions. I will also ensure that the Payment Modules 'edit' link is restored to working order as a secondary task. After resolving the issue, I will document my findings and the changes made in a clear and simple manner for your understanding. To get started, I will need the root/SSH access details and the incident report you mentioned. Thanks!

Hi, I’ve read the details carefully and understand you’ve already done substantial application-level diagnosis. I would continue from your existing incident findings rather than repeat Zen Cart, cache, database, or PHP-code troubleshooting that has already been ruled out. I have 7+ years of PHP/MySQL development, debugging, API/integration, and existing-system maintenance experience. For this issue, I would focus specifically on the Apache → proxy_fcgi → PHP-FPM request boundary. My approach would be: • Review your complete incident report first • Trace a reproducible failing HTTP request at the Apache/PHP-FPM layer • Inspect Apache/proxy_fcgi and PHP-FPM logs/configuration and correlate timestamps • Use server-level tracing where required to isolate exactly where the 500 originates • Fix the underlying configuration/infrastructure issue rather than masking the symptom • Re-test home/category pages repeatedly under real HTTP traffic • Investigate and restore the Payment Modules “edit” link • Provide a concise plain-language report covering root cause, fix, and verification I’m comfortable taking over an issue after extensive prior troubleshooting and working from documented evidence rather than restarting the investigation from scratch. I would start by tracing the Apache worker handling a browser request with strace and mod_proxy_fcgi trace logging, then compare its handoff and response path against the four successful CLI reproductions. The key targets will be FastCGI parameters, request headers, Apache proxy status handling, PHP-FPM pool behavior, and the exact point where the clean worker exit becomes HTTP 500—without revisiting the application causes you have already ruled out. Within 2 days, I will deliver the confirmed root cause, implement and verify the server-level fix on home and category pages under repeated real requests, restore the Payment Modules “edit” link, and provide a concise plain-language incident report describing what failed and what changed. Can you provide root/SSH access and the existing incident report immediately when the project starts? Muhammad Saad

I can investigate this directly through SSH/root access, reviewing your incident report first and then tracing a reproducible failing request across Apache, mod_proxy_fcgi, PHP-FPM, Unix sockets, and worker processes using tools such as strace and detailed Apache/PHP-FPM logging. I will identify the actual failure point, implement the fix, and verify the home and category pages under repeated/real requests, not just one successful reload. I can also restore the Payment Modules “edit” link and provide a clear incident report explaining the root cause and resolution in plain language. Quick Questions Can you provide the existing incident report and SSH/root access? Which Apache and PHP-FPM versions/configuration are currently active in Plesk? I can start from your existing findings and focus immediately on the unresolved infrastructure boundary instead of repeating completed diagnostics.

PHP runs the page fine on CLI and the FPM worker exits cleanly with no crash signal — that combination says the script almost certainly completed and Apache rejected or discarded the response, so the fault sits between FPM and mod_proxy_fcgi rather than inside PHP. The usual causes are oversized response headers blowing past the FastCGI buffer (Zen Cart sending a large session cookie or a long stack of `Set-Cookie`/redirect headers), output starting before headers are flushed, or a `ProxyTimeout`/`fastcgi_backend` mismatch in the Plesk vhost — all of which produce a 500 in the browser with a silent, clean PHP exit. I'd start from the Apache error log at LogLevel `proxy_fcgi:trace8` during a live reproduction, capture the actual FastCGI record stream between the two, and compare the CLI response headers against what Apache receives, so the diagnosis rests on evidence rather than another round of elimination. Once identified I'd fix it at the vhost/pool config level, confirm with repeated requests, and write up exactly what the cause was. Available to start straight away.

Hi, I can investigate this at the Apache → mod_proxy_fcgi → PHP-FPM boundary rather than repeating the application-level troubleshooting you have already completed. The testing you have done is particularly useful because it narrows the issue to the request handoff, so I would start from your incident report and trace an actual failing browser request using SSH, Apache/mod_proxy_fcgi logging, PHP-FPM status/logs, and targeted strace where appropriate. I would focus on identifying exactly where the HTTP 500 is being generated, reproduce the failure consistently, implement the smallest safe configuration or infrastructure fix, and then verify the home and category pages under repeated requests. I can also investigate the Payment Modules “edit” link separately and provide a concise plain-language incident report documenting the root cause, fix, and verification results. Thank you
