Non-Profit Flash/XML project

Hi All,

This is the spelling exercises. I have attached the files they provided. In some cases the asterisk (*) is used for its actual value and in other occasions in place of a SMILEY or GRUMPY face. This is just the spellings sections, and there are more to do with MATCHING, FILLING THE BLANKS, etc. Please keep in mind that this is a non profit project so keep the bid values as low as possible so we can afforde it.

See the sections below relevant for each Excel documents (they don’t say much anyway) and let me know what you think.

Spelling 1

- This should have the ability to retrieve words from a data storage (database, ideally XML). Upon configuring, it should be able to show however many words for a session. For example, if we have it configured to show 10 words at a lesson/session, it should show ONLY ten words. The configuration of this can be determined by use level (i.e. 5 words for BASIC, 12 for INTERMEDIATE, 20 for ADVANCED).

- How it should work?

A word appears (Randomly selected from the data storage, but the same word never repeated in a session) for no of seconds (this delay maybe configurable to be adjusted by the teacher) and goes off – during this time the student should have seen the word and memorized how it’s spelled.

An single asterisk appears to show input required (Reason for a single asterisk is not to indicate the no of characters expected).

Asterisk disappears if at least a single character is entered.

Asterisk to appear if all characters are deleted

Enter button activated when at least one character present

If enter button clicked, and answer is WRONG – highlight the entire word in RED, show a GRUMPY face at the right of the word, and after a set time delay, jump to the beginning (step 1 – except no need to select a new word till the student gets the word right).

If enter button clicked, and answer is CORRECT – HIGHLIGHT the word in GREEN, show a SMILEY face to the right of the word and activate the NEXT button or move to the next word after a set time delay.

if enter button clicked, and the answer is WRONG repeatedly for 3 times (or configurable number of times), display a message to the effect “YOU SEEM TO BE HAVING TROUBLE – PLEASE CLICK HELP TO LEARN MORE” and give the option to READ HELP, EXIT, TRY AGAIN. If the student tries again and fails, the same step 8 should be repeated.

Spelling 2

- This should use the words from the same data storage mentioned in section above (Spelling 1) and incorporate the same logic to decide how many words to be used in the lesson/session

- How it should work?

Randomly select a word and replace a character with a randomly selected letter (which is not part of the word) from A-Z and refer to this as the NEW_WORD.

Display the NEW_WORD

Allow the ability to highlight any letter and change it to whatever the student feels right -> if the word is different to the NEW_WORD, activate the ENTER button.

If the answer is WRONG, highlight the whole word is RED and show a GRUMPY face to the right of the word and after a set time delay, jump to step 2 again.

If the answer is WRONG repeatedly for 3 times (or configurable number of times), display a message to the effect “YOU SEEM TO BE HAVING TROUBLE – PLEASE CLICK HELP TO LEARN MORE” and give the option to READ HELP, EXIT, TRY AGAIN. If the student tries again and fails, the same step 5 should be repeated for every time failed.

If the answer is CORRECT - highlight the word in GREEN, show a smiley face to the right of the word and activate NEXT button or move to the next word after a set time delay.

Spelling 3

- This should use the words from the same data storage mentioned in section above (Spelling 1) and incorporate the same logic to decide how many words to be used in the lesson/session. The data storage should be able to have a audio file associated to each word.

- How it should work?

Randomly select a word and play the AUDIO (see note below). Have a button to play the audio again in case the student fails to listen.

Prompt a single asterisk to indicate INPUT requirement to get the student to type the spellings of the word he/she just heard. Asterisk behaviour is the same as highlighted in SPELLING-1 above.

Activate/Display the ENTER button when at least one character is typed.

If correct, highlight the word in GREEN and show a SMILEY face to the right of the word and activate/display the NEXT button

If incorrect, highlight the word in RED and show a GRUMPY face to the right of the word and after a set time delay, jump to the beginning (step 1 – except no need to select a new word but to play the same audio).

If the answer is WRONG repeatedly for 3 times (or configurable number of times), display a message to the effect “YOU SEEM TO BE HAVING TROUBLE – PLEASE CLICK HELP TO LEARN MORE” and give the option to READ HELP, EXIT, TRY AGAIN. Note: you don’t have to do the audios. If you have a test audio file and repeat it for all the words, which can be replaced later.
