This project is an introduction to using research in an argumentative paper. It is not unlike what we have been doing this semester, but will use multiple sources in one essay. We use research to give credibility to our own arguments or to enrich them, or both. The position on the topic taken must be students own, and they will use the research undertaken to support that position. A research project is not just a compilation of information without a position. Such a paper will not pass. The project must be written in students own voices, which the source drawn on validates. Otherwise there is no students voice and no position, just information thrown together! Students, not the research pieces should be in charge!
Option #1) This research project will be 3-4 pages long and include an MLA Works Cited page at the end of it, which lists all sources students have read, even if the students have not quoted or paraphrased from them. This protects students from one form of plagiarizing, which is that the student was unknowingly influenced by what he or she read, even if not quoted from or paraphrased. Students whose work will be plagiarized will fail the project and be reported to the Hostos Academic Integrity division. Identifying plagiarism is very easy to do. Plagiarizing is when one takes from another authors work without giving due credit to that author.
One of the 3 sources students need to use can be taken from our book, Food Matters. Students should go to Academic Search Complete in the Hostos databases for their sources, and to Opposing Viewpoints. Students can also use a counter-argument, which is a position held by a writer with a view opposing that the student holds. But if this is done, the students must supersede the opposing argument by showing how your own (supported) is the better position. Its more manageable when beginning to do research to stay with supporting research.
Here is the MLA format for citing your sources, in the order the information needs to be provided:
Authors last name first, then first name then middle initial
Name of article in quotes
Name of source (this time a book) article or essay is from. If a book of essays, include the editor, first name first, last name last
City of publication
Year of publication
Whether publication is an online or print source. If Web, follow also with date the source you use was posted online
Sample Entry in Works Cited page (you may copy this entry)

Refer to the following paper for its visual layout, including header, Works Cited page and body formatting: [url removed, login to view] and model your own paper on that format
