CONNECTING WITH ALMA MATER
Looking for internships/ jobs is hard. Seeking industry, practical knowledge of what you want to do when you’re out of university is harder. Chances are you are not gonna be doing something that directly aligns with your major. You wanna explore, you wanna know what opportunities are available at your disposable. One way to do this is by directly going to a website, reading what the company is about, reading what roles they have and deciding if that satisfies your hunt. Another way to go about that is by connecting with people - talking to people who have practical knowledge of the industry - people who are working in the industry. Now let’s get specific here, if you wanna connect with a random person, chances are they are not as enthusiastic about seeking connections as you are. But people who are from the same university might be. People who have gone through the same education as you, who were once deeply integrated in the culture you are right now - realise the struggle, realise the importance of connecting with alma mater.
This is what the idea is about. Connecting with alma mater. A platform where people will have access to people who are working in the industry, but went to the same school as you.
Imagine a LinkedIn but specifically for ALMA MATTER.
These people are way more willing to help you, they can guide you, MAYBE they can refer you so you can secure an internship/ job in the company you wanted. Moreover, they are people who share the same integrity as you.
This idea is further expanded into clubs. Now, a club that I know of - Hyperloop reaches out to people from the same school, from the same club and ask them for funding. But they don’t have access to the entire list of people they can get help from. They’re limited to 50 people, wherein they could talk to 100 and secure more funding.
Example :- Being a 20 year old, finding an internship in a top company is a daunting process. Figuring out which department I wanna work for is something, which is becoming more important day by day. If I can connect with people who are from the same school as me - I can seek guidance from them. Get a referral etc...
Example2 :- imagine I’m a 30 year old guy - tired of my job - not able to seek clear mentor ship - not able to get the interview for XYZ Company. I can connect with my peer from the same school, or someone who graduated earlier than me and reach out to him - see if he/she can help.
Basically a LinkedIn but very specific and limited to alma matter.
