The redesign and rebuild my existing website i.e. www.abetterworld.co.uk.
In an effort to illustrate what I want please pay a quick visit to my supplier: www.moteng.com.
Put simply I require this entire product catalogue (over 20,000 items from a wide range of manufacturers) to be available for sale on my website.
However, unfortunately “technically speaking” I can’t say how this can best be done. This as my knowledge of web/database creation/management is almost non-existent.
Consequently, I thought my supplier would be in a position to help. They in turn asked the designer who responded thusly:
Our website is a dynamic website that uses the database from MEDS to update all of its information. The best way for a customer to get this type of information is for them to sign up to be CDI customers, then there are 3 files that we update every night that has product information, inventory information, and order information. Those files will only help him populate
his database; from there he will have to build his site to pull the
information from the database. I know there are lots of free shopping cart type things out there that have already been built and he can use that to get the info from his database to his website.
I would like each product to have an individual page. If I understand correctly this will be good for increasing the search engine traffic. You know when searching for a specific product on say Google and when you click through to the website you get taken straight to the “right” product page – so you don't have to search again from the homepage.
I'd like each of the products to have at least one image.
The easiest solution at the outset is probably using the images from Moteng. However, I do have my own images (at the moment only for a handful of products) which: I would like to use wherever possible. So I would like to the design to allow for this. For instance take a look at
[url removed, login to view];rd=1&item=6505414291&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
See how the small version links to bigger version and this has a link to my homepage at the bottom.
Each product needs to have a brief description. Again, you could hopefully use the one from Moteng albeit this being super brief.
However if possible I would also like for the design to allow for a more detailed description to be added at a later date. This would most likely be taken from the manufacturers website and be "copied and pasted" laboriously into whatever database you create.
Naturally each product will also need a price.
There is no need or requirement for the stock level to be displayed i.e. the goods won't actually be in stock. Rather, as you can see from abetterworld I say that the goods are available via 5-12 working day delivery (I usually place a weekly order with my supplier).
Importantly though please note that not all of the products are in fact available for immediate purchase. Some are what they call “special order or pre order items ”. Basically, this means that they’ll only obtain the item to order and this takes anywhere between 2-4 weeks. Perhaps, it would be best not to include such products (that is) if the inclusion would increase the complexity and therefore the expense too much.
If possible I would also like to have the immediate purchase option available as I do at present. That is when the goods are in fact in stock ready for immediate dispatch. So, to be clear, that would mean that the same product could have two different prices with the "buy now" obviously being the more expensive.
However this would only be required for a tiny percentage of the 20,000 items. Probably no more than say two hundred items in total.
Also, I would like a system to print out the invoices and delivery address labels. Perhaps, also being able to integrate my Ebay sales into this system. By "integrate" I mean that so I can print out all my address labels and invoices for that day (using the same system) at the same time.
Finally, as most of my sales come from Ebay; Paypal would seem to be the payment method of choice.

This should not be a problem considering that the developer only provides a medium for you to add in the products in a user-friendly manner. :) Sophia
