Apple Business MDM Mac Setup

There is a sequencing trap in this job, and it is worth catching before the Mac is touched. You want end users to hold Admin access once policies are in place. On macOS, a local admin can remove a manually installed MDM profile — which would quietly undo the control you are paying for. The only thing that makes enrolment non-removable is supervision through Automated Device Enrollment: the device is added to Apple Business Manager, assigned to Intune, and picks up its management during Setup Assistant on first boot. Which means the order matters a great deal. The Mac must not be walked through Setup Assistant with a personal Apple ID first. If it already has been, the clean fix is to add it to ABM by serial through Apple Configurator or the reseller, then erase and let it re-enrol properly. After that the rest is configuration profiles rather than clicking around in System Settings: FileVault enforced at enrolment with the recovery key escrowed to Intune, passcode and lock policy, managed software updates with a deferral window, and the app list — Office, Chrome, VS Code, Cursor, pgAdmin, SQL Server Express — deployed so they are present at first login rather than installed by hand. The handover document is written as a runbook, so Mac number two takes twenty minutes and does not need me. Tell me whether the Mac has been through Setup Assistant yet. That single answer decides the path.
