Critical thinking and writing (CTW) exercises are key assignments that will aid in the development of your understanding of the material and concurrently your analytical and written presentation skills.
The purpose of the CTW exercise is to help you become familiar with key content and processes covered in the lectures, sharpen your summary skills, practice your critical thinking and writing skills, identify key aspects of the topic, and present your own views. Communication is the cornerstone of this industry whether this is conveying information to decision makers, subordinates below you or in the workplace between co-workers. Developing excellent writing skills will serve as a distinct advantage when writing future papers and ultimately report writing for employers.
CTW Exercise Introduction:
The idea of public safety underlies many of the choices we each make in our everyday lives, as well as numerous public policy decisions and laws. But what is it? What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “public safety”?
Considering the information we covered in Week-1 on “Public Safety in Canada Framework”, you will submit a 5-page essay that discusses and analyzes the following questions:
1. What is meant by public safety?
2. What exactly does it mean to be safe?
3. What is required as part of government’s obligation to assure that each and every one of us is
Write a paper that presents a position on the key issues and answers the question. All presentations of opinion or belief must be supported by justifications, reason, and fact. Therefore, you will be using academic sources to argue your case.
Your CTW assignment should not simply summarize the reading, and it should not review literature related to the readings. It should convey your original thoughts about the given topic. You can take an idea or problem/issue from the reading and run with it. Go beyond what has been presented in the reading and connect it with the given topics and/or propose new hypotheses or research. Feel free to be critical or question what has been presented.
There is no simple “right” answer to the questions asked by this assignment. Try to look at the key perspectives of the approach selected and provide an assessment of the events backed up by your cited research, on the intersection of the approach and offence.
Formal documents are written from a neutral position and should present the summarized facts obtained. Personal pronouns should not be used (i.e., I/me/my/mine). Rather than saying “I believe that public safety is...”, state it in a neutral format like, “It is assessed that public safety is...”.
