For the 3,000-word essay, you are required (individually) to collect, read, critically evaluate
and synthesise a range of information and data on how the Chatham Place development in
Central Reading came about: how did it happen? You will need to map-out the key
actors/interests, events, resources and ‘tools’ involved in the process and consider the
wider forces affecting the development process. Furthermore, you should also reflect upon
the ‘micro-politics’ of the process (how did actors/interests influence the process?) and the
distributional outcomes and impacts arising from the scheme (who gained and lost?).
Finally, you will need to consider and reflect upon the dynamic nature of this process: how,
if at all, did this constellation of actors, resources, forces and outcomes change over time,
and with what implications?
