The final project of the class requires students to select a topic of his/her own related engineering neuroscience, such as computation models of neural circuits. The final project is also required to include some elements of computational simulation or modeling. The student will also need to present their results with a 10-minute presentation during the final week (TBD on the exact date). A final report (~5 pages in Frontier in computational neuroscience format, format guide will be provided) is also required to submit to the instructor by Friday midnight of the final week describing the project and computational results.
1) Topic selection
Please submit a tentative title with a short abstract (approximately 200 words) for the instructor to review through email. The instructor will then review the title/topics and the abstract and decide if the topics is approved before the thanksgiving break through an email reply.
2) Things to avoid
Plagiarizing or direct copying other people’s research work or paper is strictly prohibited. It is okay to build on other people’s research work; however, significant deviation or modification is required. Projects of students who plagiarized or with high degrees of similarity of prior works will not be graded.
3) Final report and presentation
The students will be required to do a 10-minute powerpoint presentation during the final week. The presentation will include an introduction to the problem, the proposed solution or method, the results, and discussing lessons learned for the project. In addition, student who are enrolled in this course with a graduate standing are required to submit an approximate 5-page final report in Frontier of computational neuroscience format by Friday midnight of the final week. The report should include an abstract, an introduction, a method, a result, a discussion sections, and a final remark or conclusion. Figures to demonstrate the computational results shall be included. Bibliography and references are required to be properly cited according to the journal’s format and the length of the bibliography should not be included in the 5-page limit.
4) Grading standard
The final presentation will be graded based on 1) the amount of work, 2) method difficulty, 3) clear and easy to follow presentation, 4) quality of the PowerPoint and the oral presentation, 5) dissimilarity to prior work or innovation. For graduate student, the final report should include all the required sessions and will be graded according to the writing, the explanation quality, and the amount of details included in the report. The presentation and the report will weight equally for graduate students.
