Algorithm for finding matches on a gem matching board

The board consists of 8 rows with 8 gems. There are 8 different possible gems + possible stones blocking gem matches. I have all of possible matches written down. I would like an algorithm that finds possible matches and returns the one with the best score. I can provide pictures of board and possible matches. The code must be in python and work fast enough.
