These crimes are not confined to the past. Even now, millions of people are denied their most basic rights. Civilians are killed in armed conflicts. Children are forced into labor or recruited as soldiers. Women are punished for seeking education. Journalists are imprisoned for speaking the truth. Entire communities are persecuted because of who they are or what they believe. What makes these violations even more tragic is that they are often preventable. They persist not only because of cruelty, but because of indifference. Because when injustice happens far away, it is easy to look away and tell ourselves it is not our responsibility. But human rights are universal. An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted after the devastation of World War II, was a promise—a promise that the world would never again allow such horrors to occur unchecked.
