Our simulation software original was purchased many years ago and has been recently updated last year. Originally the software came with a USB key which I could easily transfer from one computer to the next. The later software uses a virtual key in which I must call support to attain a different key if I were to transfer computers. This is not rented software, it is licensed to me. Recently I had a major hard drive corruption so a new hard drive was installed. Unfortunately the software is keyed to the System ID and due to the new hard drive, and the fact that I did not renew my maintenance; they are requiring me to pay an absurd amount to generate a new key for an “administration fee”. Considering that the original OS went corrupt, I was unable to retrieve the original system ID as I would simply change the ID for the new OS. Is it possible to retrieve the old system ID from the license file and emulate it along with any other locked serial items? (See below scope)
Above this, considering the software number crunches for many hours, my end-plan was to be able to virtualize the OS allowing me to run the software on a simulation-customized server and emulate the display on a general purpose workstation. This way I don’t tie up my workstations for hours while the simulation crunches numbers.
Scope of work,
1. Allow the ability to utilize the software on a new computer. This can be achieved by retrieving the original system ID and any other locked items the software requires to function (MAC address, hard drive serial, etc.) From the license file I provide and assisting with cloning this information on the new computer. As long as the locked information is the same, the vendor doesn’t care – this was discussed to me from the vendor.
2. Assisting with running the software virtually. The simulation software is to run on a powerful server while the display on a PC across a network. I have only fiddled with VMware server so I do not have much experience with virtualizing software in this manner. Step-by-step procedure may be required for a first time virtualizer.
3. Assistance with hardware setup for simulation server for best results. The simulation software only allows me to utilize one core on the processor so I would need to configure the hardware for best results. The software is locked to one core on one processor so possibly overclocked and water-cooled system for best results.
There is a time crunch on this project. I need to be able to get the software running within 2 weeks. The virtualization and server setup will be required within 1-2 weeks following.
I can provide the following:
The software and all instructions
My license agreement – proving that this software belongs to me (if that is an issue)
All previous license files
Current fully functional license (software vendor had given me a temporary license to use which is fully functional but time limited)
System information generation software – To retrieve new license, we are to run a generator software which generates a file that we send to the vendor. The vendor then replies with a new license.
System information (current configuration) generated from this software
Anything else required can be most likely accommodated.
After discussing with the software vendor, they have also informed me that they are only able to provide a 1 year license which expires even though we have full rights and ownership of the software. The configuration of the new computer / virtual computer must be the same as the original as the yearly licenses are bound to the original configuration, or the license time limit must be removed.
Please do not bit on this project until you have fully read and understood the project in it's entirety. I have so far 3 bidders that did not do so and have dropped out. I don't want to waste my time as much as yours.
