I use a PDF generation script on a website which normally takes a long time to complete. If the user navigates away from the page, the download is aborted. I want to have the scripts changed in such a way, that the download is immediately started in the background and the user can continue with other tasks. The focus must stay in the current tab. Therefore simply using target="_blank" to open the PDF download in another tab is not an option, because the focus is then switched away from the current page.
I have attached three files which give a simplified idea of the download. [login to view URL] is the main page which contains the download link. [login to view URL] simulates the slow generation of the PDF file and [login to view URL] is the PDF file which is sent to the browser after 10 seconds.
With the headers used in [login to view URL] Chrome currently starts the download directly, Firefox and Internet Explorer wait 10 seconds before the download starts and if the user navigates away in that 10 seconds, the download never completes.
