Speed up a bloated WordPress website theme

Job Description:
We have a WordPress website that loads to slowly - here's the link [url removed, login to view]
We've identified the theme as one of the things slowing the site down. It's a commercial theme that's no longer in development, so we'd like to hack it and speed it up to the max, while keeping the site's look.
We'd also like to look at plugins and what can be improved there.
Some optimisation is already taken care of by our host pagely.com.
We're also running the W3 Total Cache plugin.
Here are some benchmark speed reports:

The site currently loads upwards from 5 seconds. Our aim is to get it below 2. We'll consider the project a success when all 3 benchmarking tools above show the site loading in under 2 seconds.
