We currently have a site running a modified Dolphin 6.1.4 and have paid memberships to access all features (such as blogs, classifies, mail, events, etc...)
When a new user signs up, Dolphin automatically makes them a Standard Member. We have removed access for standard members for all features. Nothing is usable unless they upgrade to one of our Full Membership accounts. However, a Standard Member is still able to 'view' most of the features (can view blogs, events, news, their messages, etc....). Since they are only Standard, they can view, but not reply. We don't want them to participate/reply unless they upgrade, but we also don't want them to view everything either (so that they are enticed to upgrade).
A perfect solution is to have a standard member have the same basic restrictions that a 'NON member' has. So with all of the areas that we have marked 'member only', a standard member does not have access or cannot view. Their only usable function is to login and access the membership page to upgrade. They cannot see their profile, mail/messages, events, blogs, news, etc... Other than the membership/upgrade page, any other navigation should return an error "you cannot access this feature, please upgrade to a full member" (similar to what a non-member would receive).
