Remove Horizontal Menu from Open Cart Template

I need to have the horizontal menu removed from an Open Cart template. The same menu options are available on the left side, so the top horizontal menu is not needed. I would also like to know how this is accomplished because I have spent several hours trying unsuccessfully. I would also like to extend the featured module all the way to the right margin so 3 products can fit on one row. The original template had 3 columns. I already removed the third column from catalog/controller/common/[login to view URL] and from catalog/view/theme/theme093/template/common/home.tpl. I''ve attached a screen shot for clarification.
