Nagaraju Gajula, Android developer (Jurassic Run and 2048: Animal Kingdom) Written Jul 21, 2016 When the interviewer asks about your app, he want you to treat him as a user and sell your app. If you are successful in convincing him that your app is useful and is better than similar apps in some aspects, then you can consider your app to be a hit. The following steps describe recommended approach: Category: The apps in Google Play are sorted in corresponding categories like Education, Finance, Medical, Productivity etc. First of all find the category your app falls in. It is appreciated if your app is in same category as the company you are seeking job. It’s fine even if it doesn’t, but you need to justify if your interviewer asks the same. Describe the category and target users to the interviewer. Purpose: You need to have a purpose to make an app. Never ever say that you are just testing features or just starting with basic apps, such apps don’t qualify to be discussed in interviews. You can say that you’ve made it for your final year project, but prepare to face the question ‘why this and why not some other app?’. So, it is better to write down your purpose for making that app before interview. If you don’t know where to start, then find similar apps and list out their features, and compare with your app. You can mention the additional features you are offering, better UI etc. Modules or Activities: If your app is developed into individual modules, then start with them and dig into details, otherwise explain activities and their functions. If you are using modules for Android Wear or TV, then describe them at the end, but don’t start with them (Unless the app is exclusively made for them). Design: Describe the major layouts and what features you’ve incorporated in them. Some features like Recycler view, Card view, custom drawables, toolbar, components from libraries etc define the level of knowledge you have. So, make sure what to describe and what not to. Testing: It is important to explain whether your app is properly tested or not. Describe the devices you’ve tested your app on, the bugs or errors (unless they are minor or stupid) and whether you’ve solved them. You are not a developer unless you resolve errors on your own. Improvements: It is optional, but you can still (if you have time and interviewer is curious) explain the significant improvements planned. If the interviewer is willing to install and use your app, you are selected.
