We are an Australian book publisher specialising in child protection and empowerment. .
This will be a simple free application for iOS and Android phones. It’s core functionality will be the initially random display of a series of screens with discussion questions on them as well as recommended answers" to those questions. The app’s purpose is to provide a range of conversation starters for a parent to ask their child about issues surrounding Body Safety and Body Autonomy. It is designed to be used in downtime by the parent when the parent and child are waiting for the something such as the bus, or waiting to see the doctor, or any time they have a few unstructured minutes together.
The app is used by the parent and is not designed to be read/viewed by the child. The app basically presents a series of ‘slides/screens to the user after running a series of splash screens which act as advertising/product branding and help files. The user asks a presented question of the child. The parent and child discuss the issue/question and when done the parent can click either of two buttons. One is “Got It” and the other is “Revisit Later”. The app keeps track of which “slides” the user has marked as “Got It” or “Revisit Later”. When the either button is pressed the system moves to the next slide. The user can also swipe left and right to move through the available screens at any time. When all slides have been completed in that we have “Got It” or “Review Later” recorded against them, the system now starts displaying the slides that have had “Review Later” marked in random order. The system continues in this way until all slides have been marked as “Got It”. The system then presents a successful completion page to the user perhaps in the form of a certificate of congratulations. (consider more elaborate gratification for the child?) The system then offers to reset to the default initial state. Ie no slides marked. Ready to start again with a new child?
In the initial version there will be approximately 24 question screens plus one help screen and a few splash screens.
A status indicator should be visible somewhere on each slide giving an indication of how many slides remain untagged, how many are tagged “Got It” and how many have been tagged “Review Later”. Possibly bottom of screen as per attached mock up.
Given the app is free and is acting as advertising for our company it is essential that all aspects of appearance and functionality be appealing, polished and professional. For the sake of clarity the attached image is a mock up to illustrate functionality not a sample design.
The system should be designed so that alternative versions can easily be created. It should be as flexible as possible and the tool should be considered a template. The system could be driven by an XML text file. The XML file would control the number of slides, the text that appears on each of them and the image file that is used as a background for each slide. Also a range of audio files should be able to be specified by the XML to be played in association with each slide or even button press. The XML option is a suggestion only not a stipulation. The goal is to create an easily re-purposed template.
