I am working on a complete identification and control study of an inverted pendulum in MATLAB/Simulink. The main focus of the identification phase is handling measurement noise, so I need a solid approach that can filter or model the noise while still producing an accurate continuous-time or discrete-time plant model. Please note that I want this project to be done **purely in MATLAB/Simulink at the theoretical and simulation level**. I do **not** need any physical implementation or experimental hardware setup. Once the model is validated, I need **two separate controllers** to be designed, implemented, and compared. The possible options are **LQG/LQR control, robust control, and nonlinear control**. It is **not necessary to implement all three**. Choosing and developing **two suitable approaches** is enough, as long as the final report clearly compares them side by side so their strengths and weaknesses can be discussed in class. ## Main objectives * Document the simulation setup, measured variables, controlled variables, and overall control objectives. * Perform system identification in MATLAB/Simulink with explicit treatment of measurement noise, and deliver a model whose simulated open-loop response matches the reference data. * Design, tune, and simulate the selected controllers; include time-domain metrics such as settling time, overshoot, and steady-state error, as well as any frequency-domain analysis that supports the discussion. * Summarize the full work in both an engineering report and a concise presentation slide deck. ## Required deliverables 1. Simulink models and MATLAB scripts for identification and control. 2. A well-commented MATLAB function or Live Script that reproduces the main results. 3. A PDF report explaining the methodology, identification accuracy, and controller performance comparison. 4. A slide deck of about 10 to 12 slides for classroom presentation. ## Important note My professor specifically asked for this project to be presented in **IEEE format**, so it is important that the **final report follows IEEE style and structure**. In addition, I also need a **presentation slide deck** that explains the full story clearly, from identification to controller validation. I will consider the project complete when the simulated responses in your models match the documented performance metrics in the report, and when the presentation tells a coherent and clear story from system identification through control validation.

I've worked extensively with MATLAB/Simulink on control systems projects, and this one is right in my wheelhouse. The inverted pendulum is a classic benchmark, and doing it rigorously at the simulation level with a proper identification-to-control pipeline is exactly the kind of work I enjoy. For system identification, I'll apply noise-aware techniques, likely a Kalman filter or an output-error/subspace method, to extract a reliable continuous- or discrete-time plant model whose open-loop response closely matches the reference data. For control, I'll design and compare two approaches, most likely LQR/LQG alongside either robust H∞ or a nonlinear controller, with full time-domain metrics (settling time, overshoot, steady-state error) and supporting frequency-domain analysis. All deliverables will be production-ready: well-commented Simulink models, a reproducible Live Script, an IEEE-format PDF report, and a 10 to 12 slide classroom deck. I'll make sure the presentation tells a clear, logical story from identification through controller validation, exactly what your professor is looking for.

I did this for my control system theory lab, utilizing MATLAB, back when I did my bachelors, around 10 years ago utilizing a PID controller. settling time, overshoot and steady state error are minimized from tuning parameters of PID controller.

Hi there, I read your project description and I am a perfect fit for this. As a Control Systems and MATLAB Engineer with a PhD, I specialize in system identification, handling measurement noise (using techniques like Kalman filtering), and designing advanced controllers. Since this is an academic project, I know exactly what your professor is looking for regarding the theoretical approach, the IEEE formatting, and a clear, story-driven presentation. My Plan for Your Project: System Identification: I will use MATLAB/Simulink to filter the measurement noise and extract a highly accurate continuous or discrete-time model that matches your reference data. Controller Design: I will design and tune two distinct controllers. I recommend LQG (since it handles noise perfectly) and a Nonlinear or Robust controller to provide a strong, side-by-side comparison for your class. Testing: I will run full-time domain (settling time, overshoot) and frequency-domain analyses to compare their performance. What I Will Deliver: Clean, well-commented MATLAB scripts and Simulink models. A fully automatic Live Script or main function to reproduce the results. A professional, academic-grade IEEE format report explaining the methodology and results. I am ready to review your reference data and start right away. Would you like to share the data so I can take a quick look and confirm the timeline? Best regards, Arman Chilingaryan

Hey, I love that you're tackling measurement noise head-on. Most classmates ignore it for fast, inaccurate results. Let's pair an LQR controller with a robust one—creating a perfect contrast for your IEEE report and presentation to stand out Execution Plan: 1. System ID: Build a Simulink setup to filter noise and extract an accurate pendulum model. 2. Controllers: Design LQG/LQR and Robust controllers, comparing metrics like overshoot for analytical contrast. 3. IEEE Report: Document methodology strictly following IEEE format. 4. Slide Deck: Condense the complex data into a clear, 10-slide story. Why I’m the Best Fit: As an engineer focused on Model-Based Design and control systems, I build these Simulink environments daily. I also regularly design technical content and MBD presentations. I know exactly how to translate heavy engineering math into an easy-to-explain narrative that will seriously impress your professor.
