Australia and New Zealand Home Utility Research Project

Introduction

This small research project has two parts, first we seek to understand the utility market, how consumers interact, consume, pay for, and understand the utilities they use at home.

Secondly, we seek to understand the number of students, young professionals and others who share housing together, i.e. multiple people living in the same house together who share bill payments.

As a structure to respond, the research project has been divided into three parts, they are:

Part 1 – Market Overview

Part 2 – Problems

Part 3 – Innovation

Part 1 – Market overview

We seek to conduct market research for the utility company sector in Australia and New Zealand.

Utility companies include:

a. Power Companies

b. Internet and home phone

c. Cable or satellite television

d. Home gas services

The research questions we are seeking to understand are:

1. The size of the market for each of the utility companies above for both Australia and New Zealand, their market share.

2. Number of consumers and households for each utility company.

3. Number of people who are in shared housing. That is, people who live together.

4. Number of students in each country, by city and state.

5. Number of new utility company accounts created per year.

6. Industry churn by utility company – that is number of times consumers switch providers.

7. Innovation budgets as a percentage of total budget for utility companies

Part 2 – Problems

Problems consumers face, frustration and pain points in the Australian and New Zealand markets.

For the following utilities:

a. Power Companies

b. Internet and home phone

c. Cable or satellite television

d. Home gas services

We seek to understand the following research questions:

1. What kind of problems do consumers face?

2. What complaints have been made on public forums, blogs, face book pages, websites and similar of the utility companies in Australia and New Zealand? What are the most frustrating points consumers face.

3. What complaints have been made on public forums, blogs facebook pages for utility companies in United States and United Kingdom?

Part 3 – Innovation

Global innovation in the utility sector.
