My objective: being able to setup a virtual box internal network with 1 XP or Seven VM in the domain managed by Samba 3 in a Debian 7 VM. The XP machine must be able to enter the domain.
For a demo, I setup a Samba 3 PDC (with a openLDAP backend) on a debian 7.
It is working.
There are several VMs, 1 debian 7 à LDAP+Samba, 1 Windows XP as client.
I want to be able to make it enter the domain managed by samba.
When I tried to put a windows XP machine, it fails, because of the DNS lookup.
I did setup a bind9 to answer to DNS requests, but it still fails
I was forced to setup a DNS, while I made it work several years ago through WINS without DNS, it seems it is no longer possible.
See the attached documents for details.
There are the logs and config files.
for example NMBD log says:
name_to_nstring: workgroup name [url removed, login to view] is too long. Truncating to _TCP.DC._MSDCS.
- I used smbldap-tools to setup ldap directory
- I need to make it work on debian 7
- DNS is not required by me, if we can avoid it it is fine
