In this developed world where the Rail network forms one of the most widely used transportation systems, there is a potential need for deploying IOT systems to create connected railways. In fact, legacy infrastructure is gradually being replaced by train management systems in which trains become interconnected communication hubs, transmitting data among themselves and to network control centers, and receiving instructions from control centers. Machine-to-machine communication, with some help from the cloud, enables operators to utilize equipment, tracks and stations more efficiently, while dramatically reducing safety risks.
The following are some of the several areas that would benefit from using Internet of Things in railway system: • A journey planner application could recommend the fastest or most comfortable current trip allowing for road conditions to the station, live train times, available car parking capacities, passenger loading, etc. • Combining passenger loading information from trains with social networking apps will help spread demand peaks. • Intelligent closed-circuit TV cameras not only provide a record of events in case of an incident, they actively provide real-time alarms of the occurrence of potential problems. • Information concerning categorization of faults can be analyzed across multiple assets, even multiple operators, to spot trends and identify areas for preventative maintenance.
Railways, as mass public transport mode, have unique characteristics. It has large capacity, high safety level, and free from traffic jam. Those characteristics make railway a primary public transportation. In fact, even railway transportation has a lot of benefits for society, but they still face many technical problems. Service quality level of Rail transportation is still low compared with other transportation modes. At present railways operation is still colored with the delay, limited condition vehicle, and unclear train travel information that often disadvantage passengers, and many other services offered fail to attract passengers. These conditions result in decreasing the quality of services and insufficient railways operation.
Approach: The IoT solution applied for the smart railway application makes it easy to grasp the condition information distributed over a wide railway area. To deduce the potential and feasibility, we design a prototype model of the network architecture of IoT solution of one of the components of the system using a networking based open source software like cisco packet tracer. Outcomes:
• Analyzing the existing system and predicting the future trends
• Understanding the big challenges of integrating IOT with railway system
• Introducing an IOT solution consisting of device platform, gateway, sensors,IoT network, and platform server for smart railway infrastructure.
• Simulating a network-based cloud system with smart IOT devices for one of the many components of Rail transportation system
• Demonstrating an implementation case study
• Evaluating the results for efficiency
